Frequently Asked Questions

+ What is a deck?

A deck is a platform built out of wood and/or composite materials. It is ideal for a variety of outdoor spaces because it does not require grading or flattening of the ground surface. This differs from a patio surface that is built out of paving material or concrete. We do not build patio surfaces, but we do have contractors that we highly respect who do these types of project. We specialize in the design and building of a wide variety of decks that can suit almost any need.

+ How much does an average deck or patio cover cost?

There is no such thing as an average deck. Every deck or patio cover is a custom project that can vary greatly in price. There are many things to consider when budgeting for your project such as materials, size, height, function and city, county, and home owners association requirements. All of these things, and more, will affect the price of your project.

+ What are maintenance-free decks?

Composite decking is a worry free surface that most companies warranty for 25 years. It will not need to be stained or painted ever, they can be walked on with bare feet, and they are less slippery than wood. They will not warp, crack, or rot as wood decks have the potential to do, although the structure and hand-railings made of wood will need regular maintenance.

+ What products do you use?

Decks: We use a variety of woods in our decks. The structure is most often built out of douglas fir based on quality and affordability. The walking surface can be comprised of hardwood such as ipe and mangaris or soft woods such as douglas fir, redwood, and cedar. We currently use these companies for composite decking: Trex, Azek, Fiberon and TimberTech, but we are always willing to look into other alternatives. These companies each use their own blends of material to produce a variety of styles and uses. Your design specialist will be able to help you choose the best product for your needs.
Patio Covers: We built patio covers out of douglas fir, redwood, and cedar. We currently build aluminum patio covers using Elitewood Classic by Four Seasons. It is aluminum that is embossed to have a cedar wood grain texture effect. It comes in a variety of colors that will give the illusion of wood. You get the look of wood without the worry of wood-rot or termites, and it is compliant with all high-risk fire areas.

+ Will you be painting the wood at my house?

We ONLY do touch up painting on site. We will paint or stain your entire structure in our warehouse. We roll-on two coats of the highest quality, long lasting, paint/primer-in-one in the color of your choice then deliver and build your project with already painted wood. There is no mess for you and your structure will last longer because the wood is fully coated, leaving no exposure, and creating a durable, long lasting, product.

+ Will you design my deck or patio cover?

Our team does design decks and patio covers, however we are not architects or landscape designers. We have 12 years of experience designing decks and patio covers specifically and 30 years of construction experience so we can help create the best design for your space. However, it is important to consider a variety of factors before we begin your project. You will want to think about access points, whether doors need to be added or stairs built, the purpose of your deck, the look, as well as any electrical or plumping needs. We want to help create the outdoor space that will suit you best and build the deck or patio cover that will accomplish your outdoor goal.

+ I live in a high-risk fire area. Can I build anything?

Yes. However, you are limited on size, products, and treatments. Our specialists can help you build a project that is compliant with high-risk fire and still create the outdoor space that you need.

+ Will my project need permitting or engineering?

Each city or county has its own requirements. You can find this information from the building departments of your city or county with basic information. We will permit and/or acquire engineering on every project for which it is required. Costs and fees are based on need, size, location, and structure. Your specialist is highly knowledgeable about each city we build in and will be able to discuss these costs and requirements with you when considering your project.

+ How long will this take?

The most basic project can take as little as one day. However, the more complex, the longer your project will take. A large deck will take longer simply because of the process required to build a fully permitted, inspected, and high quality structure.

+ Do you use vinyl?

No, because we have yet to find a product we can stand behind.

+ When is the best time to buy a deck or patio cover?

Right Now! With the benefit of living in Southern California we have great weather all year long. We build throughout the year and any time is a great time to install and design a deck or patio cover.
